My blog friend Hydrant Girl has a burning question for me.
‘What do I read in the bathroom?’
While normally I would say if it’s burning you probably should go see a doctor about it, it’s not what you think.
She has challenged me – called me out – publicly double-dog-dared me to let you in on my toiletry tendencies by way of a meme.
Meme: Pronounced like ‘theme’, but without the m. A meme is a self-propagating thought spread from one person to the next – a sort of chain email for the blogosphere.
So I’m tasked with giving you exciting insights into the question at hand & in turn, passing the gauntlet on to the next unsuspecting blogger.
Ready?…
My official answer is ‘nothing’. But I’m sorry…really? Do people really take things into the bathroom to read?
Now…if I’m taking a long, hot bath…then yeah – I may bring a book. But not always. I’m more apt to bring ice cold ginger ale & delicious dark chocolate.
But my answer is absolutely & positively boring…nothing like the humorous answer H-Girl had…she always makes me laugh.
So let’s see…what do I keep around the house?

There’s the magazines in the living room I keep for visual inspiration. But they also tend to make me extremely homesick. There’s no antique shops here to go stroll for beautiful old pieces of blue & white china.

The plethora…si, Hefe’ a plethora…of Archeaology magazines kept on Eric’s nightstand which I snitch once he’s done reading them. We’re both big Zahi Hawas fans!

My current read – The Alchemyst, the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel.
With all the heavy, adult-life laden issues I’ve been dealing with lately…I’ve suddenly become drawn to light, entertaining, young adult novels. Easy reads that make me feel good at the end of the day.
This is the first book of the series & I went ahead and ordered book two at the same time because the book selection here is just about non-existent.
There’s also no used book store & I’m such a slow reader that it’s too much of a hassle to keep returning to the library over & over to extend the return date.

The first young adult series I started was Septimus Heap…I’ve read one through four & I’m waiting for book five to come out on paperback. But I also love Dan Brown…and let me just say Angles & Demons was a much better book than the D’Vinci Code.
Now the only thing left to do is to dare…ahh, tag…the next in line. So here goes:
Cynthia!…You’re up first, Chica. Surely the Tribe of Stinsonwon’t shrink away from such a quest & will come up with some pretty good doozies. What’s that would-be Aerospace Engineer of your’s reading these days?
Tee!…You’re next, Bubba. This seems like exactly the kind of thing that’s up Poohpa’s alley.
And Deb…over at Howdy from Cowtown…(my hometown)…ought to find this fun.
And while I’d be absolutely interested to see what Gen is reading…I’m not sure this if is the right kind of topic for her new Scarlet Acres blog on penny pinching.
But how about you?…What do you read in the bathroom? Or what are you reading now?
And I’d love to hear if any of you own Kindles, or Nooks or another kind of eReader & what you think of them. Moving in the military with a ton of books is not fun…so I’ve seriously been considering one but I’m hesitant. Let me know if you like your’s.

Let me be the first to put an “end” to this burning question….and, by the way, if it burns, you might try Preparation H! Sorry…this topic is going to pot quickly! My summer reading this time is different. I have been reading college textbooks, but now it is the newspaper or a woodworking magazine. However, lately I have been playing ZooZooClub on my phone.
And, Jennifer, Gen might could use the topic and add the use of the old Sears and Roebuck as a way of pinching those TP pennies! You have your reading and wiping material all in one!! (I know, that was bad!) How is that for recycling??
Well, growing up in rural Arkansas{living way out in the sticks was uptown to me!}, I became particularly fond of the old Sears Roebuck catalog when using the outdoor facilities{outhouse}. It served a double purpose fairly well: One use was ro look at pictures of things we couldn’t afford to buy, and the other use was………well, you get the picture! Nowadays, I keep a magazine rack in the bathroom with plenty of light reading, like Family Circle or Good Housekeeping. I don’t read any catalogs, because once you’ve had the Sears Roebuck catalog, nothing else comes close to it! With tongue in cheek, I wish you happy reading.
I have the Sony Reader and I love it! Or, I guess I should say that Greg loves it since he took it with him to Korea and now its closer to you than me.
The only thing I don’t like about it is that I miss actually holding the book. I miss the feel and weight of the book in my hands. I miss flicking the corner of the page in anticipation of turning the page. Crazy, but I’m an avid reader and its my only hobby so cut me some slack. lol
There are several books which I have bought time after time again and those were the first books that I bought and added to my Reader.
The number one book I would recommend would be Up Country by Nelson DeMille. It’s by far one of my favorite books and such a good read. If you’ve read The General’s Daughter (or seen the movie with John Travolta which came out about 10 years ago) this story has the same character, CWO Paul Brenner who goes back to Vietnam 20 years after he served there to solve a murder from that time.
I mostly read military fiction because Greg is as avid of a reader as I am and we tend to share books. But I promise, there’s a little romance and mystery in the book that anyone would love it.
Right now, I’m rereading the Twilight Series (I also spent Tuesday night standing in line at 4:00 p.m. to watch a triple feature of Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse – which started at midnight) with my bff because after all, I am still a 16 year old girl inside.

Also … thanks for your email. You calmed my nerves immediately upon reading it. You are a wise woman and I’m taking a deep breath and scheduling a long massage soon.
Here I go .I do read in the tinkletorium.Nothing very exciting ,the news paper or maybe a Harbor Freight catalog.I had to quit reading anything of subsance. In my old fart age,I go to sleep after about 2pages. I do how ever listen to audio books.Currantly a Vince Flnn novel.I love bang-bang shootem ups.I like anything by Dan Brown,Robert B. Parker,Johnathan KIng,or Robert Craise.
When the kids were small the bathroom was the only place I could have any time to myself. These days I may just ponder what to wright on Poohpa’s blog.Great times with the family(things like crap shooters),are usualy my inspiration.
I have always said a man thinks best when he is in the—–.
I quess I should say I listen to the books in the car.Nothing on the radio is worth a crap( pardon the pun).It makes the drive to work more acceptable.
My life is busy, I am constantly multi-tasking just to finish my day, but I choose NOT to read
in the one room where I do not have to multi task … no phones, no computers, no books …
NADA!
I can read anywhere … My favorite place to read is outside, hopefully with a nice breeze, warm sun & with a big glass of water.
I just finished reading “The Lion” by Nelson DeMille, the 5th book staring John Corey. DeMille is one of my favorites & I’ve read all but two of his books and I agree Up Country is a great book.
I’m in the middle of two others “Big Rich” story on the oilmen of Texas. And a simple read “Doom with a View” by Victoria Laurie.
Ok I’m catching up on this one a little late. I will let my braniac of a son answer himself though.
The bathroom is probably my very favorite place to get some reading done as it means I will not suffer some uncouth interruption. The bathrooms walls are a holy sacristy of privacy that no child, man or dog is allowed to violate. Hence I can recieve unto myself a deep abiding peace within it’s sacred confines.
my favorite reads for the short term queenship in the throne room are articles from Mother Earth News and Chicken Soup For The Soul series. I like Martha too, but get mad that my own life is so out of sync with whats in the pages. Hobby Farm magazine is starting to look good too. All are fantasies anyhow.
The privacy of my bathroom and the privacy of my mind allow for flights of fancy that the comfort of my couch will not.
I’m currently reading Anthony Bourdaines new book on my birthday present; a new reader, from Hubby. Bourdaine is a juicy read, but he cusses an awful lot.
BTW this is a great blog topic. Thanks for starting it Hydrant Girl.
I’ll be answering this burning question on an upcoming post. tehe! Looking forward to Part 2 on your post today.
