And it's bound to not be the last time

puppy-1

Yesterday on the daily walk with Maggie, we stumbled into this little pup down at the Prim’s house.

Smaller than Kitten (my little old cat) & about the size of Moo-Moo’s head, the pup was casually walking along our path.

She/He (we can’t be sure) wasn’t too afraid of Maggie, but hesitated coming any closer than the 6 feet in front of us.

Very friendly, seemingly sweet-natured, very dirty & obviously some level of sick just looking at that right eye.

I’ve never seen the pup before. I looked around to see if an owner was close by – nothing, no one.

Maggie, of course, wanted to play so badly that our normal “sit-stay” routine for meeting new dogs wasn’t working.

Anytime I got a foot or two away she’d try to run up to the pup…and the pup would scoot back a good four feet.

So I tossed the pup a dog treat from my pocket & Maggie and I went on our way.

I told myself that this little pup’s fur seemed to have been trimmed not too, too long ago – that he/she must live around here somewhere.

And we didn’t see the pup again….until this morning.

Eric came home from PT & told me the pup was outside. He crawled back in bed…I crawled out. I couldn’t stop thinking about the pup.

I decided to give him/her some food & try to get a better look at that eye.

The pup was still out front & when I sat the bowl down and sat down next to it, the pup walked straight up to me, crawled in my lap & buried his/her head into my leg.

And the pup stayed there. Not moving for a good 5 minutes while I pet him/her.

The pup was thin – I could easily feel the spine. The eye was discharging & had matted up the fur all around it – making it that much harder to see out of.

I sat there for a good 15 – 20 minutes, trying to figure out what to do.

If I was home in the states, I could scoop up this little pup, take it immediately into a vet to see what diseases or infections it had & if everything was good or treatable – without impacting Maggie – I would take the pup home.

But there aren’t any vets here – at least none that I’ve found. The only vet I  know of is at Osan Air Base & you have to make an appointment that’s a good week out.

And the Osan Vet Clinic is constantly sending out emails alerting us not to buy dogs from the locals because of all the illnesses that the dog inevitably has & that no amount of money or treatment usually works.

I finally decided to pick him/her up & take it inside to at least wash out that eye & the fur around it.

Maggie was sound asleep on the bed with Eric & I never put the pup down just to be safe.

When I had cleaned the pup’s eyes off I steeled myself to take the dog back outside.

I think that’s one of the hardest things I’ve done in a good while. Every ounce in my being was telling me to bring the dog inside, quarantine him/her in a spare bedroom & make an appointment with Osan.

But I didn’t – I kept thinking of Maggie & how much I didn’t want her to get sick….and I walked back inside.

Maggie's own Fear Factor

While Maggie has never been able to jump up on our giant bed by herself – at least without a running start – she’s always been able to jump down on her own.

One morning that all stopped.

Eric was already gone, off to his daily PT, and I was still trying to wake-up – rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.

I climbed out of bed to start my morning routine while Maggie remained in bed – as usual.

I made it downstairs to get breakfast, booted up the laptop & was settling in when Maggie began to whine.

Maggie was sitting on the edge of the bed, refusing to jump down….terrified to jump down.

Moo-Moo, what’s going on? Let’s go!…

bed-7

Maggie – c’mon, you’re a big girl. You’ve jumped-off the bed dozens of times. Let’s go!

bed-8

It’s not that far down, see?

About that time, Eric made it back home.

I asked Eric to call out to Maggie to see if she’d jump down for him – she’s a Daddy’s girl & will go anywhere for him.

But she only whined more.

bed-3

She wanted down – I tried every way to coax her down. Nothing was working.

Not Daddy’s stinky sock. Not peanut butter potty treats. Not even abandoning her to fend for herself.

I just couldn’t figure it out until Eric shared a key piece of information.

Apparently the morning before when she was jumping down, she somehow either got her feet caught in the covers or just wasn’t awake enough and she wound up falling out of the bed & onto the floor.

Well – that explained it. So I had to find a way to get her down.

I wound-up having to swing her backside around to set her back feet on the floor. (She’s just too big for me to pick up.) At which point the lightbulb went off in her head - ’Oh, I’m down.’

We went through this routine of ‘I want down – come get me’ for almost a week before she finally was able to jump down on her own – but only if you stood right next to her.

That took another few days of doing until one day she finally hopped out on her own.

Now if we can only find her a bed of her own…that she won’t destroy.

All the way

sleepy

Today was filled with all kinds of chores & errands and my head is going to hit the keyboard if I don’t make it to bed soon.

Ever since Maggie destroyed her bed, she’s been sleeping with us – and let me tell you, that girl is a BED HOG!

(I knew there was a reason I wanted to name her Piglet.)

And her schedule is completely off – she’s been barking at me in the middle of the night to take her outside – which I stumble down the stairs to do – only to have her bark again a couple of hours later to either go out again or play.

She’s so off schedule that I wind up spending the majority of the night sleeping on the couch because I just know that one of these nights trying to go down the stairs I’m bound to be way too tired & fall head-first down them.

So I’ve been consistently getting about 2 hours of sleep at a time for the past several weeks & I’m starting to get a bit frazzled.

But the reason I wanted to share this picture & this story, is to prepare you for tomorrow’s tale…

Maggie Moo & the Giant Bed

It’s a ‘Princess  & the Pea’ meets ‘Fear Factor’ kind of story.

And I promise to tell you all about it….tomorrow….zzzzz….
